The Medicean Port

March 13, 2016

The Medicean PortThe Port Mediceo, wanted by Cosimo I de‘ Medici, was built in the years after his Grand Duchy.

It was built using a natural inlet when the port of Pisa had become unusable due to silting.

The access to the harbor is from the Arsenal bridge, which ends next to an old customhouse, in the docking area of the ferries which go to the Tuscan archipelago.

In the outer harbor you can see the Straight dam and the Curvilinear dam, to the south the Vegliaia dam, the tower of Marzocco and, offshore, the Tower of Meloria.
